Start with the purpose
A loan lets you use money now and repay it over an agreed period, usually with interest and charges. The right type depends on why you need the money, whether you can offer security, and what repayment comfortably fits your income.

Long-term finance for buying, building or renovating a home. The property is normally held as security until the loan is repaid.

Funding for eligible course fees and related study expenses. Repayment may begin after the course or a defined moratorium, depending on the lender's terms.

Credit for working capital, equipment, expansion or other business needs. Lenders may review turnover, cash flow, business vintage and repayment history.

A secured loan raised against an owned residential or commercial property. The property remains collateral while the funds can support an approved personal or business purpose.

Moving an existing loan to another lender under new terms. Interest savings should be considered together with transfer fees, remaining tenure and other charges.

Before you apply
Approval and terms are decided by the lender. The exact checks vary by loan and lender, but an application commonly includes these parts of your financial profile.
Be application-ready
Requirements differ for salaried, self-employed and business applicants. Keep current, legible documents ready and confirm the lender's exact list before applying.
Identity
PAN, Aadhaar or another accepted identity document
Address
An accepted current address document
Income
Salary records, income tax returns or business financials, as applicable
Banking
Recent bank statements for the period requested by the lender
Understand the cost
Read the sanction letter and loan agreement carefully. These terms shape both your monthly payment and the total amount you may repay.
The percentage charged on the outstanding principal. Check whether it is fixed, floating or changes under stated conditions.
A charge for handling the application, usually paid upfront or deducted before disbursal.
The repayment period. A longer tenure can reduce the EMI but may increase the total interest paid.
The rules and possible charges for paying part or all of the loan before the scheduled end date.

Borrow responsibly
Work out how the EMI fits alongside essential expenses, savings and unexpected costs. Borrow only for a clear purpose, avoid relying on approval promises, and do not sign until the rate, charges, tenure and repayment conditions are clear.
